Introduction

Pharmaceutical Services Division is a division under the Research and Technical Support Program within the Ministry of Health Malaysia organization. It handles 3 major component national activities namely:

  • Quality assurance of pharmaceuticals
  • Licensing and enforcement
  • Pharmaceutical care management

Pharmaceutical Services Division in the Headquarters of the Ministry of Health Malaysia is headed by the Director of Pharmaceutical Services who is answerable to the Deputy Director-General of Health (Research & Technical Support). Within the Pharmaceutical Services Division, the Director of Pharmaceutical Services is assisted by two Deputy Directors of Pharmaceutical Services and 42 other supporting staff. Beyond the Division, the Director of Pharmaceutical Services directly supervises the National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau which is responsible for the quality assurance of pharmaceuticals activity and regulate the pharmaceutical industry. He also supervises the pharmaceutical services in the 13 states and Kuala Lumpur Hospital via the State Deputy Directors of Health(Pharmacy) and Hospital Chief Pharmacist respectively.

Objective

  • To ensure pharmaceutical products that are permitted to be marketed locally are safe, efficacious and of quality as well as to ensure that cosmetics that are permitted to be marketed are safe.
  • To ensure that the manufacture, importation, sale, supply, management and use of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and healthcare products are conducted according to the existing acts and regulations viz:-
  • The Poisons Act 1952 (Revised 1989) and Regulations.
  • The Sales of Drugs Act 1952 (Revised 1989) and Regulations.
  • The Medicines (Advertisement and Sales) Act 1956 (Revised 1983) and Regulations.
  • The Registration of Pharmacists Act 1951 (Revised 1989) and Regulations.
  • The Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Revised 1980) and Regulations.
  • To ensure that the patients undergoing treatment in the public healthcare facilities of the Ministry of Health receive "Total Pharmaceutical Care".
  • To ensure that public education in the rational use of drugs is continually improved.
