PRESS STATEMENT ON MALAYSIA’S ELECTION TO
THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION EXECUTIVE BOARD

 

  1. The Ministry of Health, led by YB Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister of Health Malaysia attended the 62nd Session of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for the Western Pacific which was held from 10 to 14 October 2011 in Manila, Philippines. This is an annual meeting attended by Health Ministers’ from the Western Pacific Region where public health issues and challenges are deliberated. There are 37 countries and areas in the Western Pacific Region.

One of the agenda for the 62nd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific is the election of Member Countries to fill the two vacant seats representing WHO Western Pacific Region at the WHO Executive Board. The Ministry is pleased to announce that Malaysia together with Australia were elected at the Session to be Members of the WHO Executive Board for the term 2012 - 2014.

  5. The WHO Executive Board comprises of 34 members in the field of health and elected members serve a three-year term. The main functions of the Executive Board are to give effect to the decisions and policies of the World Health Assembly, to advise it and generally to facilitate its work.

  7. Malaysia was last elected to the WHO Executive Board 26 years ago for the 1983 - 1985 term. Malaysia had also served previously for the 1963 – 1965 term. There are only five seats allocated for WHO Western Pacific Region in WHO Executive Board.

  9. Being selected to the WHO Executive Board will enable Malaysia to enhance its image globally. At the same time, Malaysia could play an active role in health diplomacy and ensure efficient health policies are implemented.
