Description | PRESS RELEASE TRADITIONAL PRODUCT “TWEE HONG SUAH” RECALLED DUE TO HIGH MERCURY LEVEL
1. The Drug Control Authority (DCA) has cancelled the registration status of a traditional product named Twee Hong Suah (MAL20034112T) as it was found to exceed the permitted mercury limit allowed in traditional products. The marketing authorisation holder and also manufacturer, Hong Yang Hoo Pharma Sdn. Bhd. has been ordered to stop the sale and supply of Twee Hong Suah immediately and recall all stocks from the market, following 4 of its batches numbered 1103026, 1106013, 1111013, 1107011 were tested to contain high levels of mercury.
2. Twee Hong Suah is traditionally used for the symptomatic relief of flatulence (stomach wind), stomach-ache, mild vomiting, mild diarrhea, cough and fever in children. All batches sampled during routine Post Marketing Surveillance conducted by the National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau (NPCB) failed the mercury test with high content exceeding the normal permitted level of 0.5mg/kg.
3. Mercury is a type of heavy metal if consumed in excessive quantity may cause poisoning symptoms such as numbness or itching, pain, skin discoloration (pink cheeks, fingertips and toes), swelling, and desquamation (shedding of skin). It can also cause serious effects such as brain and kidney damage.
4. The public is advised to stop using the product Twee Hong Suah and seek medical advice if experiencing any unpleasant effects or symptoms of poisoning. Consumers can contact NPCB at 03-78835546/5539 or email bpfk@bpfk.gov.my for further enquiry or information.
